UNESCO Executive Board Elections: Olha Herasymiuk Outlines Key Priorities for Ukraine

12.09.2025

The Bureau of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO held a meeting focused on Ukraine’s preparation for the 2025–2029 elections to the UNESCO Executive Board. The Communication and Information Sector, led by Olha Herasymiuk, is actively working to promote Ukraine’s candidacy.

During the meeting, sector leaders presented the results of their work within UNESCO bodies and agreed on the next steps.

As a reminder – Ukraine is competing for a seat on the Executive Board alongside Moldova, Romania, and Russia. The latter has already launched a behind-the-scenes campaign to discredit Ukraine, making it essential for Ukraine to intensify its efforts in the lead-up to the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference in November.

Olha Herasymiuk announced plans to hold two events in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to UNESCO to present the country’s strategic priorities. Under her leadership, the Communication and Information Sector has significantly strengthened Ukraine’s voice within UNESCO, particularly through active participation in all working groups and efforts to counter Russia’s information attacks.

The Chair of the media regulator emphasized that Ukraine is the only UNESCO member state to have established three national committees dedicated to cooperation in the field of communication and information. These include: the National Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme (IFAP), the National Committee of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme, and the National Committee of the UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). Notably, the IPDC Committee was initiated by Ukraine to strengthen efforts to protect journalists and to counter media-related crimes committed by the aggressor state.

This unique experience across various areas – including the protection of cultural heritage and the development of digital innovations in education during armed conflict – positions Ukraine to confidently present its achievements to the world and share best practices with other countries.

Olha Herasymiuk also announced an initiative to establish a Department of Information and Communication in Ukraine. The project is planned in cooperation with the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy.
